Setting up an Email Service
How to set up a secure email service on the demo server
Email Configuration
|
|
The supplied email program is called Evolution. This application was developed in the late 90's by a company called Ximian.
The company (and the product) were recently bought by Novell which
lends great weight to it's claim to be the email / office application
for Linux.
It can difficult to test this without a live email account, so we've obtained a demo account on the Linux.co.uk
mail server. Feel free to send it some test emails (demo@linux.co.uk) ,
but please don't delete anything from the folders, otherwise you'll
spoil other people's testing.
-
Step 1 - log in to your user account
- Step 2 - navigate to Applications -> Internet -> Evolution
- Step 3 - click the Forward button
-
Step 4 - enter your Full Name and in the email address box, enter demo@linux.co.uk
- Step 5 - click Forward
-
Step 6 - next to Server type, select IMAP from the drop down menu
-
Step 7 - in the host box, enter imap.linux.co.uk (the username will default to demo)
-
Step 8 - then under security, select always from the drop down menu and click remember password
-
Step 9 - click Forward
-
Step 10 - uncheck Show only subscribed folders, then click Forward
-
Step 11 - enter the address of your local or ISP's outgoing / SMTP mailserver in the host box, then click forward
-
Step 12 - click Forward to save your settings as demo@linux.co.uk
-
Step 13 - on the map shown, click on your location, then click forward
-
Step 14 - click Apply
-
Step 15 - you should see a message about the SSL Certificate for imap.linux.co.uk, click on OK
(we'll show you how to avoid this shortly)
-
Step 16 - enter demo as the password, tick the remember password box, them click Ok
-
Step 17 - maximise the Evolution window and click on the small triangle to the left of demo@linux.co.uk
-
Step 18 - click on INBOX underneath demo@linux.co.uk and you should see any messages people have been kind enough not to delete
-
Step 19 - now you're on your own. You can have a read of the Evolution documentation and if you want a secure/SSL email account, drop an email to oddjobz@linux.co.uk.
-
Step 20
- assuming you want to get rid of the certificate error, you'll need a
public certificate from the ISP hosting the email service. In this case
you can get our test certificate Here.
-
Step 21
- inside Evolution, select Tools -> Settings
-
Step 22
- click on Certificates, then Authorities, then Import
-
Step 23
- now select the file server.crt that you downloaded in step 20 and click Open
-
Step 24
- tick the three boxes listed and then click Ok
-
Step 25
- you should have a new name Cyrus IMAP Server, click Close to finish
If this all works as described, you shouldn't see any further certificate errors.
