Modem Connection

Based on historical standards, this is probably as easy as it gets.

  • Step 1 – log in as the root user. Note: the requirement to use root is something that will be fixed in the next release. You can use a user account, but you need to run a terminal session, su root, then run gnome-ppp.
  • Step 2 – navigate to Applications -> Internet -> GNOME PPP
  • Step 3 – click the Setup button
  • Step 4 – click the Detect button. If you get a modem not detected error, you may have a problem. Check out the FAQ and failing that, try posting a message on the Help forum at SourceForge.
  • Step 5 – click Close
  • Step 6 – enter a username, password and telephone number. I’ve been using (for testing purposes) a free provider in the UK whose home page is here.  Not used them too much, but they seem to be Linux friendly and they certainly seem to be Flash Linux compatible.
  • Step 7 – click Connect
  • Step 8 – when you’re done, click Disconnect

There are a number of issues with dialup networking that may cause some people problems depending on their configuration. Please see the FAQ for more details and don’t be afraid to visit the Help forum.
