Bingo! It's looking like JFFS2 isn't the major issue re; speed after all .. it looks like being the MTD block device driver ..

4 Fold increase

After hacking around in the kernel I've come up with a 4 fold increase in JFFS's write speed on a 256Mb key, which I could extend to an 8 fold if needed

I've spent the last three days trying to make FL work on a JFFS2 filesystem .. indeed I've been trying to make JFFS2 work. (this is no mean feat!)
